University President Michael Adams addressed campus safety and the drought among other issues during an “open mic” discussion with students Wednesday.

Less than one-third of students are registered for UGA Alert, Adams said, and participation may become mandatory if numbers do not increase in a year.

Following two reports of women being abducted by a man posing as a taxi driver, Adams said he thinks the University is a “safe college community,” but urged students to be cautious.

In response to the drought, he said Vice President of Finance Tim Burgess is working on suggestions for water conservation approaches. There is no “long-term answer,” Adams said, to sustaining the water supply.

He added the University will hire a consultant to ascertain the need for increased child care.

Monday, The Red & Black reported University students increased enrollment and faculty decreased since Adams became president. Adams said the article was “99 percent wrong.”

The UGA Fact Book cites students have increased by 3,297 over the decade, while full-time

faculty decreased by 42 individuals from 1997 to 2006. Adams said Sept. 27 the decrease in faculty could be attributed to budget cuts.
