Cultivated brothers create clever comedy
“The Heartbreak Kid” is Ben Stiller’s first film with Peter and Bobby Farrelly since the 1998 hit “There’s Something About Mary.”
Stand-up comedian Carlos Mencia co-stars in the movie as Uncle Tito, disguised with a wig, moustache and prosthetics.
“I was messing with people on the set because we were shooting in Mexico, and they didn’t even know that was makeup,” Mencia said in a conference call.
“I would walk up to them and pretend that I was really Uncle Tito and pick up their bags, take them to their rooms.”
Mencia said he even ate lunch in his moustache to get used to doing everyday things with facial hair.
In 2001, Mencia cemented his comedic status when he toured with Freddy Soto and Pablo Francisco doing stand-up shows. Comedy Central brought him back for various shows until his own “Mind of Mencia” debuted in 2005. The show is one of the channel’s highest rated and is in its third season.
Mencia said he’s not used to having to wait for an audience’s reaction to his jokes like he has to in the film industry.
“It’s kind of like a year ago I went ‘knock, knock,’ and in about a week or two somebody is going to go, ‘Who’s there?’” Mencia said. “It’s really difficult for a comedian, but on the other hand it’s awesome that the characters are there. When I’m doing stand-up, I have to imagine characters.”
“The Heartbreak Kid” revolves around Stiller’s character Eddie, who, while on his honeymoon, realizes he can’t stand his new wife.
A remake of the 1972 comedy written by Neil Simon, the Farrelly brothers updated the tale with their own spin on humor.
“Believe it or not, because of the edginess of [the script] – I didn’t really have any stuff to collaborate,” Mencia said. “I’d like to take credit for it, but honestly, those guys wrote some really hellacious stuff.”
Mencia said while shooting one day, the cast and crew decided to have an egg-tossing contest, and this event sums up the Farrelly’s style of directing.
“Even comedy sets are pretty serious,” Mencia said. “The Farrelly brothers’ set is completely different, man. That set is just relaxed. It’s chill.”
Though the cast followed the script, Mencia said the Farrelly’s welcomed improvisation on set.
“These guys are like technicians – every little step they make sure that something better and funnier is getting done,” Mencia said.
“And Ben [Stiller] is just amazing at it. I mean, he’s an unbelievable stud when it comes to comedic acting.”
