Ladies, fix your hair and dust off your stilettos because Mr. Valentino is coming to town for one night only.

His performance is courtesy of the Committee for Black Culture Programming.

A division of the University Union, the committee seeks to provide activities on campus that reflect the cultural, educational and social experience of people of African descent.

For their first entertainment event of the year, committee members said they brainstormed about who they wanted to perform at the University.

“We decided on Bobby Valentino because it not only provides a contrast to the last concert but will also attract a wider audience,” said Chanelle White, a senior from Stone Mountain and coordinator for CBCP.

The Atlanta rap duo Ying Yang Twins performed in the spring.

Bobby Wilson, known to fans as Bobby Valentino, joined the music scene in the 1990s when he formed a music group with friends called Mista.

“I like his music, especially his collaborations with other artists, and there are going to be lots of ladies there, which is a plus,” said Jason Hafford, a freshman from Snellville.

In 1996, the group had a hit song called “Blackberry Molasses,” but lackluster sales from its first album caused the second one to never be released.

Returning to the music scene in 2003 on Ludacris’ Disturbing the Peace (DTP) record label, Valentino has had a number of hit songs from his first self-titled album, including “Slow Down” and “Tell Me.”

His sophomore project entitled “Special Occasion” includes the ballad “Turn the Page” and the smash hit “Anonymous” featuring Timbaland, who also produced the song.

A graduate of Clark Atlanta University located in southwest Atlanta, Valentino returns to Georgia today to perform at the University.

“Bobby V. is a good artist that makes good music, so it will be interesting to see the type of show he puts on,” said Latasha Johnson, a sophomore pre-pharmacy major from South Carolina.

Over the years the committee has brought a variety of well-known performers including poet Nikki Giovanni, Ludacris and the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble.

The committee also plans to have a diverse range of other cultural events this year.

The group is probably best known for its annual “Week of Soul” activities, which have included movie screenings, performances and soul food feasts.

“In addition to performances, we are also looking at having discussions, forums and lectures not related to entertainment,” White said.
