Blue Mountain returns after 6-year break up
When a band that has been broken up for six years decides to get back together, there is good reason to see if the magic is still there.
Blue Mountain, an alt-country band, formed in 1993 in Mississippi and will be playing tonight as a part of their reunion tour.
“Coming back together we realized how great we did certain things like harmonizing,” said Laurie Stirratt, the band’s bass and vocalist.

Another member of the trio, Cary Hudson, is ex-husband of Laurie, although there is no animosity.
“We are best friends and get along great,” Stirratt said.
Frank Coutch, the third member and drummer, has been with the band since nearly the beginning after dismissing six other drummers, Stirratt said,
“I was at their first show in the reunion tour in June and really enjoyed it,” Fritz Gibson said, the manager of Tasty World, where they will perform tonight. “They are one of my favorite bands.”
Cary Hudson has been to Tasty World as a solo act during the band’s split, but Blue Mountain has never performed in Athens together.
“We are looking forward to playing in Athens,” said Stirratt. “It is a town very receptive to different types of music.”
Blue Mountain was one of the first bands in the alt-country genre and inspired many other bands after them, Gibson said.
After this tour, the band will record a new album and stick to short tours, said Stirratt.
“Being on the road for shorter periods of time is better because long tours make you tired and it puts pressure on the band,” she said. “Plus Cary has a daughter and needs to make time for her.”
The band currently resides in Mississippi, with Stirratt and Coutch living in Oxford, where the band was formed.
Hank Vegas and Bo Bedingfield are the opening acts going on at 10 p.m.
Blue Mountain will go on around 12:30 a.m., Gibson said.
