Felton focusing on 2007 starters
Merely days after dismissing leading scorer Takais Brown from the team, Georgia men’s basketball coach Dennis Felton said his only concern is the fast-approaching season.
“To be honest, I’d much rather talk about the players that are here,” Felton said when asked about his team’s reaction to the dismissal.
“I’ve said about all I’m going to say about players who aren’t here.”
Felton announced Friday that Brown, who already had been suspended for nine games for violating a class attendance policy, was dismissed for failing to comply with undisclosed team policies.
Yet the players who are here include only two experienced post players, Dave Bliss and Rashaad Singleton, who averaged about 12 minutes and four points a game each last season.
Brown averaged more than 28 minutes and 14 points per contest as the Bulldogs’ starting power forward.
Felton said he is isn’t sure who will play the bulk of the minutes in the wake of Brown’s departure, but he is excited about sophomore big man Albert Jackson and three new freshman forwards.
Jeremy Price, Chris Barnes and Jeremy Jacob all stand at least 6 feet, 7 inches tall and will have the chance to fill the void left by Brown’s departure.
Jackson will miss the first six games for violating the attendance policy.
“I think the players that we have in our team, especially our young frontcourt players, are faced with just a tremendous opportunity, and I think they’re really excited about that,” Felton said.
Bliss said he has been impressed with Price’s development in particular.
“He’s been able to pick up stuff pretty quick for a freshman, and he’s been willing to do the things that are needed. That’s always tough for a freshman.”
Today is the last day for students to pick up season tickets, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Stegeman, Booths 3 and 4. Students may get up to four sets of tickets with proper IDs.
Some season ticket packages remain for sale and can be purchased for $25 at Stegeman, Booth 4.
