A University student arraigned in court Monday remains in jail for soliciting sex from someone he believed to be a 15-year-old girl, police said.

Peachtree City Police arrested Joseph Fitzgerald Carroll on Friday after he solicited sex on the Internet and traveled to Peachtree City to meet the girl, Chief Jim Murray said Monday in a telephone interview. The girl was an undercover police officer.

Carroll, 22, was charged with violation of the Computer Pornography and Child Exploitation Prevention Act of 1999.

He could be released on $75,000 bond and on the condition he not use the Internet, Murray said, but had not posted bail Monday afternoon.

Murray said Peachtree City Police and the Georgia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force began the operation to catch child predators in May 2004 and have arrested 22 people. Carroll is the second University student arrested as part of the police department’s ongoing Internet sting on child predators.

In September, University doctoral student Govinda Bahadur Basnet pleaded guilty to computer pornography charges. Peachtree City Police arrested Basnet, 41, in December 2006 after he sent a naked photo of himself through e-mail and enticed who he thought was a 15-year-old girl for sex.

Murray said others arrested in the sting include students from Georgia Tech, Georgia State University and the superintendent of the Pike County School System.
