The Board of Regents approved a new $2.5 million intramural field for the University, said John Millsaps, assistant vice chancellor for strategic communications.

The multipurpose field, approved in the board’s Tuesday meeting, was presented because of the growth of the intramural and club sports program. The proposal explained participation in these programs has increased by more than 1,800 students in five years.

The field will be funded by institutional funds, which Millsaps said are within the University’s budget.

“The president and staff . have looked at a need in their budget and found the funds within the institution’s operating fund to fund it.”

The facility will be on South Milledge Avenue.

Millsaps said the board approved all projects presented by the University.

“They approved everything,” he said.

The board approved a plan to renovate room 232 in the Ramsey Student Center – used by the gymnastics team as a practice facility before the Stegeman Coliseum Practice Annex was built.

The proposal for the room includes creating two floors out of the room. According to the plan presented to the regents, the first floor will house cardiovascular, strength and conditioning space and offices for volleyball coaches.

Plans for the second floor include fitness and instructional exercise space.

The Regents approved a $3.4 million budget for the project, but the University only has the funds for the first phase, according to the proposal. This phase will be paid for with $2 million from the UGA Student Affairs Auxiliary funds and $400,000 from the Athletic Association.

The regents appointed the architectural firm Stanley Deamon and Sears Inc. of Atlanta to work on the renovation of the Georgia Museum of Art.

The renovation of the Georgia Museum of Art was approved in 1998 and has a $20 million budget.

The board increased the budget for the second phase of the Performing and Visual Arts Center. Costs for the second phase increased from the 1998 budget of about $32.4 million to $34.2 million.

The board discussed its trademark policy.

The Associated Press reported the Regents agreed to readdress a policy restricting vendors from putting the University’s logo on alcoholic beverages, caskets and other items.

In other business, the board agreed to establish the Bill and June Flatt Professorship in Foods and Nutrition. The Regents also named the Cora Lee Fanning Memorial Garden in the courtyard behind the Fanning Institute and the Warren and Mary Mitchell Plaza, the outdoor entrance to the Stegeman Coliseum Practice Annex.
