“Beowulf”

Adventure

Starring: Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins and Angelina Jolie

Rating: PG-13

The epic that put more high school lit students to sleep than NyQuil has been retooled by director Robert Zemeckis (“Forrest Gump”) into a sprawling, visual spectacle. Ray Winstone plays the title character in the action adventure playing in 3-D at participating theaters.

Perhaps more deadly than the demon Grendel is the mutant’s mother, brought to life by Angelina Jolie, who uses her powers of seduction to destroy men.

“No Country for Old Men”

Thriller

Starring: Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin

Rating: R

In a throwback to their early filmmaking days, the Coen brothers put their dark twist on the film noir once again. An adaptation of the novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy, “No Country” follows Llewelyn Moss (Brolin), who stumbles upon $2 million in a drug deal gone wrong. Determined to keep the money, he must evade psychopath Anton Chigurh (Bardem) and the disillusioned sheriff (Jones), who is unable to cope with the rising body count.

“The Mist”

Starring: Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden and Laurie Holden

Rating: R

Director Frank Darabont (“The Shawshank Redemption”) brings yet another adaptation of a Stephen King short story to the big screen with this horror fest set in a tiny community where nasty creatures prowl within a thick, abnormal mist. After retreating to a local supermarket, survivors must take a stand against an adversary they can’t even see.
