Take one look or listen to local sextet Rockinwood, and you’ll know there is something different about this group.

While some see Oprah as a saint, the members of Athens-based sextet Rockinwood see her as a … sex symbol? It may sound strange, but the band released the song “I Bang Oprah” on its 2007 album “Collect THIS.”

“They probably want to bang her too,” guitarist Mike Walliser said of people who love Oprah but lack the ability and/or creativity to publicly display their affection.

The Oprah song is nothing unique in the band’s catalog. Many of the band’s songs bear interesting names, like “There’s a Roofie in my Beer” and “I Got a Sock.”

“Most of our songs are conceived when we’re really intoxicated and say something funny and we decide we have to write about it,” Walliser said. “Our songs aren’t entirely all jokes, but they’re all (written in a) light mood – we don’t discuss anything too heavy in nature.”

Rockinwood consists of Walliser, vocalist Owen Hunt (the two are also members of Athens band The Leavers), bassist TJ Machado, guitarist Danny Coulter, drummer Erika Rickson and banjo player Kyle Tuttle.

Walliser said the band’s first show was at Amici’s and from there it went on to play larger shows at venues such as Tasty World and the 40 Watt Club.

“The first couple of shows went pretty sloppy, but you can’t really know what you’re doing ’till you’ve done it a few times,” he said. “Tasty World really helped us a lot in giving us experience.”

Walliser said the band never fails to impress the audience with an upbeat performance full of surprises.

“We can’t put together a huge extravagant show, but we try to make it an interesting production with whatever budget we’ve got. Our bass player puts cigarettes out on his tongue, and we smashed the hell out of a pumpkin on Halloween,” he said. “We do a few country drinking sing-alongs for fun. For the most part, our shows are rock ‘n’ roll.”

Last Halloween, Rockinwood played an entire set of “Misfits” covers at Tasty World. Walliser said the band enjoys covering songs and usually does one or two covers per show as a way to keep fans on their toes.

“We’ll play a chorus or bridge of several songs and make them flow together. We did that with Guitar Hero before,” he said. “Owen is a good frontman, and (the band tries) to engage the audience.”

Of course, the live show isn’t the only thing on the minds of the band and its fans.

Coulter has a truck full of recording gear that he used to record Widespread Panic and The Killers for a previous job, and Rockinwood plans to use the gear to record its second studio album next month.

“We’re not really sure of a name yet, but you can tentatively call it ‘Get ‘em Drunk and Take Their Money,’” he said.

The expected title is a perfect fit in the band’s music and performance philosophy.

“Our main theme is ‘if you’re not having fun, then why the hell are you doing it?’”
