Local art shines at show benefiting Nuci’s Space

“Even the darkest of shadows cannot be borne without light.”
Local artists were asked to submit works inspired by this anonymous quote for a community art show held at Nuci’s Space tonight.
“We wanted something that looked at both sides of emotion,” said intern coordinator Alyssa Bernstein, a University graduate from Marietta.
The submissions were open to all members of the Athens community. More than 20 artists, including high school students, University students and professionals will be participating in the show.
The artists have the option of selling their works with 30 percent of the profits going to Nuci’s.
The idea for the art show was proposed at a Nuci’s Space Student Organization meeting, as an event that would be open to all ages.
“I was invited on Facebook, and I thought the idea behind the quote was interesting,” said Dominique Edwards, a scientific illustration major from the Bronx, N.Y.
Edwards said she liked that the quote allowed for interpretation.
Works displayed will be a variety of paintings, photographs, pottery and even poetry.
Some works show influence of the quote by use of extreme light and shadow, while others are more interpretive and abstract.
The event will include food and musical acts and will stay open through Dec. 10 for people to view.
Nuci’s mission is not only to support local artists, but also to raise awareness of what the center is all about. Visitors to the art show will be able to see the resources that Nui’s Space has to offer the community.
The plan is to present a serious show of talent with a semi-cocktail feel, according to the interns.
“It will be an excuse to dress up a little,” said intern Nadia Farra, a senior from Richmond Hill.
