Our Take

Let’s get physical

Ramsey offers many classes students can take advantage of this semester

It’s the fourth week of the semester, and as the schoolwork starts piling up, New Year’s resolutions are moving further and further down the list of priorities.

Already, attendance at Ramsey Student Center is beginning to wane, and soon, only the dedicated regulars will remain.

Each semester, Ramsey offers a plethora of fitness classes at student-friendly prices. Although the one-time fee may seem steep at first glance, when compared with the membership prices of other Athens gyms – $29 per month at BodyPlex – it seems downright cheap.

For those interested in more than one activity, the Group Fitness Pass is only $65, and gives the buyer access to all drop-in aerobics classes, which are offered throughout the week and on weekends. More exotic offerings include belly-dancing, Zumba – aerobics set to upbeat music – and Taijiquan Kung Fu.

We encourage students to take advantage of the Pilates, yoga, dance, spinning and aerobics classes offered. You may be tempted to buy a Pilates DVD rather than register for that 8 a.m. class, but actually shelling out the cash and participating in a class can be enough motivation in itself.

Don’t be a three-week Ramsey go-er. Spring break will be here before you know it. Even if you didn’t make a Jan. 1 resolution, it’s never a bad time to shape up.

Resist the temptation to count your late night “Soulja Boy” dances as a work-out. You may be sweating it up on the dance floor of the Loft for an hour or so, but that’s hardly enough aerobic exercise.

Tips to land a job

Put your best foot forward (mentally and physically) to snag a summer job

Perhaps you’re a senior this semester, about to graduate, and are slowly realizing that after May 10, you’re going to need a livelihood. Or perhaps you are an underclassman, for whom such serious thoughts as paying for your own food and shelter are nothing but a distant theoretical problem, non-threatening at the time.

Either way, you’re going to need something to do this summer. If you want to do more than mooch off your folks and live with their curfew, it’s on you to get a real job. Hence, the Spring Career Fair at the Classic Center Wednesday.

Here are some do’s and don’t's to follow so you don’t end up crashing to the ground:

- Dress professionally. You can’t really look too serious for the function, but you can easily look too casual.

- Wear your hair professionally. If that means getting a dorky haircut, so be it. You may think your uncombed mop gives you a carefree look, but that’s not what employers are looking for.

- Bring plenty of copies of your resume.

- Hide your body piercings and tattoos. That’s all that needs to be said about that.

- Be rested. Be happy. Be ready to talk and present yourself as a flawless individual.

- If your priorities for the summer are more centered around waterskiing and building campfires, a summer camp job fair is being held at Ramsey today. Relive your youth spent at summer camp, or perhaps your youth spent inside, watching “Salute Your Shorts.”
