University student and former football walk-on Joshua Willis died following a car accident Monday morning.

Willis was driving from his hometown of Americus to Athens when he was involved in a collision in Morgan County near Madison, said county corner Adam E. Carter.

Willis was being airlifted to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta when he died from internal bleeding as the result of the car accident, said University student and friend Anna Sexton.

Willis, a 19-year-old sophomore, walked onto the football team last winter as a long snapper, Sexton said. He planned to become a lawyer and politician.

Willis’ friend, Kelby Lamar, described him as “warm” and “helpful.”

“Everyone that came in contact with him liked him a lot,” Lamar said.

A Facebook group has been formed in memory of him called “R.I.P. Josh Willis … We are praying for his family”.

The funeral is scheduled for Wednesday in Willis’ home town of Americus. Willis’ family declined to comment Monday evening.
