Bulldogs recruit top-class freshmen

Georgia football officially signed its freshman class for the 2008 season Wednesday, pulling in one of the top recruiting classes in the country.
Rivals.com ranked the 22 Bulldog signees as the No. 6 class in the country, while Scout.com put it at No. 4.
“I don’t get that worked up about (a class’ ranking),” head coach Mark Richt said. “What I’m really most concerned about is filling our needs with the right kind of talent and the right kind of person and just taking care of our business.
“I really feel like we’ve covered our needs, there’s no doubt about it.”
The class includes two five-star signees in wide receiver A.J. Green and running back Richard Samuel.
Green is the No. 2 receiving prospect in the country. Samuel, a native of Cartersville, was recruited by Georgia as a tailback, but was also a highly-touted prospect at linebacker.
“There’s two or three guys in a class that you’re just not sure (what position they’ll play) until they get in and start to lift and run and eat and just see what they do with their bodies,” Richt said, referencing both Samuel and defensive signee Nick Williams.
“It doesn’t really matter to me at all,” Samuel said of his potential position in Athens. “They recruited me as a running back so I decided to stay a running back.”
Signing day went as planned for the Bulldogs, aside from a surprise when tight end Dwayne Allen reneged his commitment to the Bulldogs.
Allen, Scout.com’s No. 8 tight end in the country, reaffirmed his Georgia commitment earlier in the week, but changed his mind Wednesday, signing with Clemson.
“A lot of it may be lost because you look at December when we were sitting there with about 20 commitments, so it really wasn’t a lot of question marks about what was going to happen on signing day,” recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach Rodney Garner said. “But we’re extremely excited about this class, we feel like we’ve signed a class that was able to address all the needs that we set down as a staff.”
The Bulldogs added depth at wide receiver with Green and four-star prospect Tavarres King, as well as in the backfield, signing two tailbacks in addition to Samuel.
A quartet of linebackers also was added, including the return of Akeem Hebron, who spent last semester at Georgia Military College.
King joins Samuel, running back Dontavius Jackson (four stars) and offensive lineman Ben Jones (three stars) as an early enrollee, something that has become a theme in recent years.
“This is a championship-caliber team,” King said. “It’s going to be fun, we’ve got good guys coming in, good guys already here, great coaches. So why not Georgia?”
“This class is a tribute to the things we’re building in this program character-wise and the things that coach Richt stands for,” Garner said. “I guess you can say it’s an A-list, but only time will tell truly.”
