London singer proves a ‘Jack’ of all music trades

COURTESY JACK PENATE
Since releasing his own EP's in 2006, Jack Penate has joined the larger-scaled XL recordings.

With a surname pronounced Pen-YA-Tay paying homage to his Spanish heritage, Jack Peñate’s music is just as mixed up and alive as his multicultural moniker. With a cheeky Cockney accent and affinity for fun, this Brit boasts a sound that’ll satisfy those that enjoy everything between The Libertines, Reel Big Fish and rockabilly swing.

The product of a posh-English suburb, Peñate departed from his university studies to follow his musical dreams – starting his own label and releasing his own EPs in late 2006. Peñate now plays labelmate to the likes of Radiohead and Vampire Weekend and struts onstage with songs that subtract the tongue-in-cheek sarcasm of Lily Allen and have a surplus of swagger all his own. With a surprising coat of pop sugar, songs such as “Spit at Stars,” “Second, Minute, or Hour” and “Torn On The Platform” show a sensitivity driven by sugar-high guitar riffs and reggae rips like Peñate’s punk and folk predecessors.

Pump up your pompadours and wax those wingtips, because this bloke brings a sound straight from the time of “Blue Suede Shoes” boldly up to today.
