A University doctoral student who loved the outdoors died last week.

Katherine Kerstetter was working on a degree in recreation and leisure studies, wrote Program Coordinator Corey Johnson in a message to students.

“As a lover of the outdoors, Katherine felt most at peace when she was backpacking and mountain biking,” Johnson wrote. “While here at UGA, she taught backpacking and was able to share her knowledge to allow others to enjoy her passion.”

Kerstetter, who was from Peabody, Mass., also loved the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots.

The University will host a memorial service for Kerstetter on April 28.

Johnson encouraged any students, faculty or staff who were affected by Kerstetter’s death to contact an academic advisor or the University Health Center.

It is unclear when or how Kerstetter died. Members of Kerstetter’s family were unavailable for comment.
