Senior Kelley Hyndman returns a serve during a doubles match against Clemson at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex Wednesday.

Tomorrow, the No. 4 Georgia women’s tennis team will head to Atlanta to battle rival No. 1 Georgia Tech in a rematch from the ITA National Indoors quarterfinals. In that match, Tech swept Georgia 7-0 en route to its second consecutive Indoors title.

“We got our butts kicked at the National Indoors and now possibly, this time, we can kick their butts,” sophomore Naoko Ueshima said.

In the first meeting, Tech won each singles match in straight sets.

“You have two top-5 teams that happen to be in the same state, that just adds to it. They handed us our only loss and this is an opportunity to avenge that loss,” head coach Jeff Wallace said.

Dogs suffer lack of outdoor practice

After its semifinal loss to Ohio State at the ITA National Indoors in Seattle, the No. 3 Georgia men’s tennis team opens its outdoor season Sunday against Furman. The only problem is the Bulldogs have not had much time to practice outside.

“We wish we had another four or five days to practice, especially since today and tomorrow it’s supposed to rain,” head coach Manuel Diaz said.

Diaz said he gave his team Monday and Tuesday after the Indoors to rest, but did some outdoor workouts Wednesday.

However, with the women’s match on Wednesday, and rain on Thursday, the team never made it outside to practice.

“We’re concerned we don’t have time to adjust to outdoor play,” Diaz said. “We not only have Furman Sunday and St. Bonaventure Tuesday, but we have Mississippi State and Ole Miss next and they are two of the best teams in the SEC. We have a short period of time to adjust.”

Softball team to compete in Calif.

With two tournament wins already this season, the No.18 Georgia softball team (9-2) will travel to California to try and add another victory to its resume in the Palm Springs Classic.

The team will play No.5 UCLA, No. 6 Oklahoma, UNLV, who is tied with Georgia at No. 18, and No. 25 San Diego State.

Georgia’s offense and pitching have been very impressive in its two tournament victories, but will be tested repeatedly throughout the weekend.

On the mound, the Bulldogs have a team ERA of 1.84 while holding opponents to a .180 batting average.

Pitcher Christie Hamilton has aided the team’s success with a 4-1 record and three complete game shutouts.
