Shooting alarms Brumby dorm residents

By on March 4, 2008

A shooting near campus sparked commotion Monday night outside Brumby Hall.

At 8:30 p.m. Athens-Clarke County Police responded to a shooting on Rockspring Street, said Detective Rebecca Croxton.

The suspect fled on foot to the area around Brumby Hall before heading toward Milledge Avenue, according to a witness account.

Police looking for the firearm searched the dumpsters and recycling bins behind the all-female dorm, Croxton said.

University Police arrested the suspect. Croxton said the man in custody had not been charged in connection with the incident as of 11 p.m.

The man shot in the back of his head was taken to a local hospital, given three staples and released within two hours, Croxton said.

“There is no reason for UGA Police to feel that anyone in the University community remains at risk for their safety due to this incident,” University Police Chief Jimmy Williamson wrote in an e-mail sent over the Arch listserv.
