Univ. worker faces drug charges

By on March 24, 2008

A University employee was arrested and charged with felony counts after Athens-Clarke County Police found an assortment of drugs on him while they patrolled in an unmarked vehicle, according to a police report.

Gaveia Martin, a South Campus custodial worker, was arrested early Friday morning. Martin was charged with two felony counts of possession of schedule III, IV and V drugs with intent to distribute, felony possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and felony drugs near a park.

He also was charged with misdemeanors obstruction of a police officer and possession of marijuana.

According to the ACC police report:

Three officers were patrolling in Broad Acres, an Athens Housing Authority property, when they saw Martin loitering between two parked vehicles.

Upon approaching Martin, the officer noticed “suspicious” behavior and Martin attempted to keep the left side of his body away from the officer.

Martin told police he bought a pill for which he had no prescription.

Before authorities could search him for weapons, Martin attempted to pull away. The officers managed to get him on the ground, and Martin continued to resist.

Once handcuffed and off the ground, the officers searched him. They found cocaine in a white plastic bag, a prescription pill and a paper towel with less than an ounce of marijuana in the front of Martin’s left pants pocket.

A field test on the drugs was positive for cocaine and marijuana. Martin was transported to the Clarke County Jail.
