Bulldog out with lower leg injury until mid-June
Wide receiver Tony Wilson will miss the rest of spring practice after undergoing surgery to fix a broken bone in his lower leg.
Wilson had surgery Monday morning to repair the bone broken in Saturday’s scrimmage. He will not be cleared for rehab until June.
“They had to insert a screw to get the ligament worked out in place,” head coach Mark Richt said. “They had to put in a plate to help the bone heal properly. They’re thinking in eight weeks they will be able to take the screw out and about two weeks after that he’ll have the freedom to run. I think they’re thinking about mid-June for him to get the OK to go full speed.”
Richt singled out Wilson many times this spring, including the play before he broke his leg.
“He was running a reverse, and actually made a really nice run, there wasn’t much there,” Richt said.
Running back suffers mild soreness in knee
Running back Caleb King was seen injured Monday, but it doesn’t appear to be anything serious. King has been playing on a sore knee that was acting up in Monday’s practice.
“He’s banged up and I don’t know how serious it is, but he banged up his knee,” Richt said. “I really don’t think it’s very serious. We’ll take a closer look tonight. He’ll get an MRI and then we’ll know a little more.”
Wide receivers shine during spring practice
It was another good day for the wide receivers as Richt said it’s been a while since the group made any mistakes.
“I can’t hardly remember a ball dropped that should have been caught,” he said. “Matter of fact, [wide receivers] coach [John] Eason was going over the stats of the receivers and most of the guys, and it’s unusual, are catching the ball at a higher percentage in the competitive drills versus the individual route running.”
Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said he’s been pleased with the receivers this spring, saying Kenneth Harris has been productive and Kris Durham has become more physical.
Bobo also mentioned Mohamed Massaquoi has had a great spring.
“I don’t think Mohamed has dropped a pass,” Bobo said. “He’s been very consistent and made a lot of tough catches.”
