Golf team to rebound at invitational
The No. 2 men’s golf team will swing back into action this weekend for the Augusta State Invitational. The invitational will take place today through Sunday at the 7,403 yard Champions Retreat Golf Club in Evans. The team is looking to bounce back from a less than stellar performance last week in Alpharetta where the Bulldogs finished in 9th place at the U.S. Collegiate Championships.
“We need to be a little bit more consistent,” said head coach Chris Haack. “We always look to get a good start from our number one guys. If we can get a good start from the top we can usually look forward to a good day.”
As has become the theme this season, the No. 2 Bulldogs will be facing an elite field that contains five teams in the top 30, including No. 7 Georgia Tech and No. 18 Clemson. In 2005, the Bulldogs finished second in the tournament to host Augusta State and are looking to build upon that success this weekend. Haack will feature a lineup of juniors Brian Harman and Adam Mitchell, sophomore Hudson Swafford and freshmen Russell Henley and Harris English with all five having scoring averages below 73.19.
“We look for production from top to bottom,” Haack said. “Anyone in the lineup is solid. From one through five, anyone can step up and carry the team.”
The Augusta State Invitational marks the final tournament prior to the SEC tournament set to take place April 18-20 in Sea Island, Ga.
“This weekend’s tournament gives us our last chance to see where our weaknesses lie and address them prior to the SEC Championship tournament,” Haack said.
