A charge of second-degree vehicular homicide has been levied against a University student following a car accident April 19 in which another student was killed, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Matthew Bickley, 19, a freshman from Athens, fell asleep at the wheel of his 2003 Ford Explorer SUV at about 2:30 a.m., according to a police report.

Tierra Bardley, a freshman from Marietta, was ejected through the windshield window and died later on the scene.

Bickley will be cited for failure to maintain his lane. Second-degree vehicular homicide is a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and a jail term of up to a year.
