Investigation outcomes

It was a wild ride this semester as The Red & Black revealed several ongoing cases of faculty members allegedly sexually harassing students. After weeks of reports, the University administration stepped up and amended the Non-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment Policy – including the creation of three new ombudspersons. We’re glad the University has taken a step in the right direction to protect its students from sketchy e-mails and suggestive poems.

Diploma with a side of drama

Following a semester in which five professors faced serious sexual harassment allegations, picking Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas as commencement speaker was not a good choice, but we’re at least glad the discussion is continuing. Because of past sexual harassment allegations against Thomas, harassment became a national conversation topic. The selection of Thomas calls attention to the administration’s poor handling of harassment in the past and diminishes the advancements that have been made this semester. Next year, play it safe – we heard Oprah is free.

Do it legally

The Recording Industry Association of America sent 26 letters to the University early this month – the largest batch so far – telling students to cut out the downloading. We support the impulse to jam to free music, but give the artists and recording industry its due.

Four: score!

Friday night, the Gym Dogs scored their fourth-straight national title, tying them with Utah for the most wins ever. They’ve now earned nine NCAA championship victories; we’re proud of our Bulldogs for all their success throughout the years, and we appreciate their positive representation of our University.

Comeback champs

Georgia basketball. SEC Champs. After a less than stellar season, the team entered the SEC Championship, and after four games, two overtimes and many held breaths, it landed on top and earned a bid in the NCAA tournament. And as promised earlier in the season, Head coach Dennis Felton shaved his ‘stache in honor of the miraculous victory.
