Men golfers in first after NCAA second round
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The top-seeded Georgia men’s golf team continued its strong play at the NCAA East Regional on Friday, extending its lead to 19 strokes.
On Friday at Council Fire Golf Club, the Bulldogs carded a 13-under-par 271, giving them a two-round total of 32-under 536. Augusta State is in second place at 13-under 555. Georgia’s second-round figures of 271 and 13-under rank fourth and ninth, respectively, in school history.
“I am very pleased with the way our guys have played the first two rounds,” Georgia coach Chris Haack said. “We felt like we had been close all spring to putting it all together, so I’m happy that we’re doing it at a tournament that means so much. Hopefully we’ve got one more strong round in us, and we can carry the momentum into the NCAAs.”
The top 10 teams in each of the three NCAA Regionals will make up the field for the NCAA Championship May 28-31 in West LaFayette, Ind.
On Friday, Harris English, who graduated from The Baylor School in Chattanooga, led the way with a 6-under 65. The Bulldogs also counted 3-under 68s from Russell Henley and Hudson Swafford, and a 1-under 71 from Chattanooga native and The McCallie School graduate Adam Mitchell. Brian Harman had the Bulldogs’ non-counting score of 1-over 72.
Swafford is the Bulldogs’ top individual at 9-under 133, which is good enough for second place, just two shots behind UAB’s Zach Sucher. Henley is third at 8-under 134, while Mitchell is eighth at 6-under 136, English is 16th at 3-under 139 and Harman is 26th at 2-under 140.
The NCAA East Regional will conclude on Saturday. Live scoring can be found at golfstat.com.
