14 Bulldogs named to track region team

By on June 3, 2008

Fourteen members of Georgia’s track and field teams were named to the All-East Region teams following this weekend’s action in Tallahassee.

The Georgia men placed 11 on the team after the 24th-ranked Bulldogs finished third at the NCAA East Regional Championships with 50 points. Leading the charge were junior Justin Gaymon (400-meter hurdles, 1st, 49.24) and sophomore Chris Hill (javelin, 1st, 247 feet), who combined to score 20 points after winning their events.

Gaymon, who also won the 400 hurdles crown in 2007, and Hill won the fifth and sixth NCAA regional titles in the program’s history.

The other Bulldogs named were junior Michael Proctor, sophomore Gordon Ritchie-Haughton and freshman Baron Brown (4×400 relay, 3rd, 3:06.51), junior John Freeman (hammer, 4th, 210-8), sophomore Israel Machovec (discus, 4th, 177), senior Ian Burrell (5000, 5th, 14:12.03), senior Kyle Helf (shot put, 5th, 59-11.75), senior Ryley Miller (1500, 6th, 3:52.25) and junior Nate Rolfe (discus, 7th, 172-3).

On the women’s side, seniors Sarah Madebach (3000 steeplechase, 4th, 10:23.61), Natalie Picchetti (1500, 8th, 4:27.86) and Sigrun Sveinsdottir (javelin, 7th, 158-9) also all finished in the top eight in their respective events.

Those individual competitors who finished in the top five at the meet automatically qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Relay teams that finished in the top three locked down their spot at the national meet.

In addition, the NCAA will give at-large bids according to the national performance list in each event.

With seven individuals and one relay team automatically qualified for the NCAA meet, Sveinsdottir and Picchetti are also expected to receive at-large bids, which would give Georgia 12 competitors at the NCAA Championships.

To be considered All-Region, the student-athlete must place in the top eight
of his/her respective event and that student-athlete’s institution must be member of the USTFCCCA.

The NCAA Outdoor Championships will be in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 11-14.
