Where: ACC Library Auditorium.

The “iFilms,” shown as part of a series, are chosen from the Library’s permanent collection of DVDs. They are selected based upon how widely released they were in theaters and how current and influential the ideas of the film are to society.
“We definitely try to pick films that people wouldn’t normally be able to see in theaters or maybe have never even heard about,” Carrie Mumah, a public relations specialist for the Athens-Clarke County Library, said. “We concentrate on showing films that have themes having to do with current events or issues in the news; basically things that will interest them and get them thinking.”
The June schedule kicks off tonight at 7 with a screening of “Flock Of Dodos.”
The film, directed by evolutionary biologist Randy Olson in 2006, was the first feature documentary to present both sides of the ideological debate between intelligent design and evolution.
In order to make sense of the heated issue, Olson traveled to his home state of Kansas to explain evolution to religious fanatics using brightly colored visual aids. Then he listened to the people who refused to accept the theory and asked them why. Despite discussing a serious subject, the film remains light and humorous by poking fun at both sides of the heavily contested debate and tweaking everyone’s ego a little bit along the way.
The library will host a new film free of charge every Thursday in June. Next Thursday, it will show “Ivan’s Childhood,” followed by “51 Birch Street” and “The Ground Truth,” which will end the series.
