Fraternity purchases historical property

By on July 10, 2008

The Eta chapter of Chi Phi, one of nation’s oldest social collegiate fraternities, is making plans to complete its next move.

The chapter is among seven fraternities planning to move from S. Lumpkin Street. A housing corporation affiliated with the fraternity recently purchased the Arnocroft house on Milledge Avenue for $1.75 million.

“The alumni and the University are coming up with a plan that works for both of us,” said William Wickey, the Eta chapter president.

Official plans have not been implemented yet. However, Peter Amann, trustee for the University of Georgia Foundation, met with Athens-Clarke County residents, commissioners and preservationists to discuss the chapter’s plans for the newly purchased property.

Part of the discussion centered around the historical significance of the 105-year-old Milledge property. During the meeting, Amann assured residents and preservationists that the Arnocroft house would remain intact if the chapter decided to move.

Fraternity officials hope to move the 80-year-old house – or at least the bricks, windows and columns – from Lumpkin to Milledge.

Local laws require fraternities to apply to the Athens-Clarke Commission for a special-use permit.

Chi Phi is one of the last fraternities to reach an agreement with the University since its plans to vacate the properties for expansion were enacted in 2007.
