Offensive line’s performance “something to build on”

By on August 29, 2008

The offensive line has been a question mark for Georgia for the past two seasons, especially after Trinton Sturdivant’s season-ending injury. The line allowed only one sack against Southern Saturday, but center Josh Davis said they still have some work to do.

“I think we did fair,” he said.

“It’s nothing to be happy about. You’re never there, you know what I’m saying. It’s just something to build on, you got the first one under your belt.We need to come out ready to work next week and iron out the wrinkles in the film room and on the practice field and get ready for some tougher opponents.”

When asked about the cohesiveness of the line, Davis again pointed to Saturday as a learning experience.

“The cohesiveness is something we’ve been working on all summer, and I think today was a great opportunity for us to build on that,” he said. “:I had an opportunity to get in a game situation where you can’t really fuss with each other.I think today was a great learning curve and something for us to build on.”

“The speed of the game is so much faster than in practice, that’s the big thing.”

Freshman kicker nails 52-yarder for first Georgia field goal

Freshman place kicker Blair Walsh, who also had PAT and kickoff duties, had his first opportunity to kick a Georgia field goal almost halfway through the first quarter Saturday. It was 52-yarder and he drilled it.

Unfortunately, he got drilled himself after the kick.

“When I got up to the kick I was like man, I really got to get a hold of this it’s 52 yards. This is my first kick and I really have to get my entire leg into it. And I did and when I saw it I was just like ‘yeah,’” he said.

“I actually didn’t get to see the whole kick because (Georgia tight end) Tripp Chandler drilled me and picked me up. I thought he broke my rib. But I couldn’t be happier right now.”

“Impressive,” Richt said of the freshman’s debut. “He played today better than he has practiced as of late.”

MLB Ellerbe sports No. 44, honors Washington

Mike linebacker Dannell Ellerbe was not sporting his usual No. 33 Saturday. Instead, he was wearing No. 44, an homage to fellow linebacker Marcus Washington, who is out for the season with a shoulder injury.

“I’ve been planning it ever since he got hurt. I talked to him as soon as they knew he was going to be out. I told him I was going to wear his jersey the first game,” said Ellerbe, who had five tackles Saturday.
