Redcoat band to be televised in national competition

The marching bands of the top 10 NCAA football teams will compete in a battle of the bands-esque contest, hosted by ESPN and Paramount Pictures, to promote the release of the most recent Indiana Jones DVD.
The invigorating and catchy Indiana Jones theme song will be blasting from Sanford Stadium on Sept. 12, courtesy of the University’s Redcoat Band.
The band won’t be playing this sprightly tune just for kicks. They will be doing it for the chance to win $25,000 and show up schools such as the University of Southern California, Louisiana State University and the University of Florida.
“ESPN is coming to film us playing in our stadium, wearing our uniforms,” Michael Robinson, director of athletic bands and assistant director of bands, said. “This will be great exposure for the Redcoats.”
The final two minute clips of each competing band will be aired on ESPN in October and played numerous times. Fans can go on-line and vote on their favorite band.
“We only have about three practices to learn the music,” Adam Chitwood, a senior trumpet player from Lawrenceville, said. “We actually just now got the music.”
The competition will be aired in October, but the exact date has not yet been confirmed.
“We heard about this opportunity for the first time at the end of band camp,” Trey Calkins, a senior baritone player from Lilburn, said. “Everyone is pretty excited about the chance to compete in this.”
