Suspended players return against South Carolina
Linebacker Darius Dewberry and fullback Fred Munzenmaier will be back from their suspensions for Saturday’s game in Columbia, but with different expected workloads.
“Dewberry has been our Sam linebacker, our starting Sam linebacker . We didn’t really see a lot of tight end sets our first two games so I don’t know how much a Sam linebacker would have played,” head coach Mark Richt said.
“(South Carolina) coach (Steve) Spurrier will certainly run some tight end sets, some basic offensive sets and that’s Dewberry’s strength to play over a tight end and he’ll be ready to go.”
Munzenmaier will be vying for No. 2 fullback responsibilities with Brannan Southerland still out and Shaun Chapas starting.
“Munzenmaier is more apt to play special teams than regular snaps right now,” Richt said.
“Right now I think Munzenmaier would be competing with (Justin) Fields for the second fullback reps this week.”
Dewberry was suspended for his role in an incident at St. Mary’s Hospital following a downtown bar brawl, while Munzenmaier was suspended for an alcohol-related offense.
Richt also said that defensive tackle Kade Weston is looking likely to return from a sprained ligament in his knee.
“Kade right now looks like he’ll be able to go. He may or may not get work against the scout team today,” Richt said.
“I think he’s getting pretty close to (100 percent) but you just don’t want to throw a guy out there who hasn’t practiced in quite some time and Tuesdays are a real physical day. If the first thing you do is throw him into that kind of situation and have some kind of setback you just feel like you’ve wasted an awful lot of time.”
