Boys ready to dress as girls on South Campus
The South Campus Sexy Pageant is tonight’s crown jewel for South Campus Student Night.
The University’s Ag Hill Council can choose a representative to participate for the coveted title, which is given to the male who can best portray the lifestyle and attitude of a female.
“My favorite part is seeing all the boys dress up in their crazy woman costumes and prancing around,” said Kate Wooten, a junior from Albany and Ag Hill representative for Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow.
The prizes – a glittering tiara and sash – are modest, but the real prize is the “pride and glory” of winning the title, said Ag Hill Council President Amanda Eade. Participants are judged by South Campus faculty on what Wooten calls their “new identity” as a woman, as well as their interviews. A People’s Choice award is chosen on monetary donations by the audience.
The 2007 Sexy winner, 4-H representative Joshua Rogers, a senior from Dallas, Georgia, dressed in a black dress and heels, which he describes as “very UGA girl colors.” Rogers said his first thoughts upon winning were, “I can’t believe it, I won.I won a drag contest and I am dressed as a woman. Oh, well, have fun with it!”
As the time to turn over the crown approaches, Rogers says, “It does not seem like it was a year ago. I am happy to see it still causing a great turn-out.”
“Basically,” concludes Wooten, “[the pageant] is a way to bring people out of their shell.”
Student night is held 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the D.W. Brooks Mall, located between the Pharmacy School and Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources.
The evening is “good, clean fun. It’s a way that we can further create a small campus feel,” said Eade, a senior from Suwanee.
Admission to Student Night is free, though the barbeque dinner is by ticket only. Eade advises attendees to bring blankets and chairs and listen to College of Family and Consumer Sciences alumna Hannah Dasher sing.
