Quarter Caps
First Quarter: UA 10-UGA 0
Alabama opened the game on fire with a smooth, 80-yard drive against a Georgia defense that had its hands full all day. After it seemed Georgia forced Alabama into a field goal try, roughing the passer was called, which kept the Crimson Tide’s drive alive. Alabama freshman running back Mark Ingram capped off the opening drive with a touchdown from seven yards out to give Alabama the early lead. After Georgia was forced to punt on its first possession, Alabama went right back down the field and put a Leigh Tiffin field goal on the board.
Second Quarter: UA 31-UGA 0
Alabama kept its vehicle on cruise control as it scored on its next three possessions. Glen Coffee took in a three-yard touchdown run – two plays after Julio Jones reeled in a 31-yard pass from quarterback John Parker Wilson. Alabama added to its big lead the next time it had the ball with a Roy Upchurch touchdown run. Then, on the following Tide possession, Wilson found Jones for a 22-yard touchdown reception, putting the Crimson Tide up 31-0 – scoring five times on its first five possessions. Georgia closed the half with a Matthew Stafford interception, and the Tide took a knee into halftime the following play.
Third Quarter: UA 31-UGA 10
Georgia showed some signs of life on its first possession of the third quarter, driving down the field before settling for a Blair Walsh field goal. Georgia’s defense finally stopped Alabama on the Tide’s next two possessions, including one where Zach Renner blocked his second punt of the season, before Georgia got the ball back to score its first touchdown. On that play, Georgia running back Knowshon Moreno took a toss sweep from the Alabama 2-yard-line into the end zone.
Fourth Quarter: UA 41-UGA 30
With 14:41 in the game, Georgia appeared to get back into the game briefly as cornerback Prince Miller returned a punt 92 yards for a touchdown to cut the Alabama lead to only 14 points. However, Georgia’s defense could not stop the Crimson Tide offense as it responded with a drive that got Alabama down to the Georgia 15-yard-line, setting up another Tiffin field goal. Alabama added another touchdown on a 12-yard Coffee touchdown run to put the game away for good with 4:13 left in the game. Georgia put up two late touchdowns as Stafford found Michael Moore and A.J. Green for touchdowns on consecutive drives. But for the Dogs, it was too little, too late.
