A University student is in intensive care after falling from the roof of the Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity house and breaking her neck this weekend.

Sarah Raymond, a senior from Alpharetta, slipped from the roof of the house on South Milledge Avenue and fractured her skull Friday night, her mother, Shurley Raymond, told The Red & Black Monday.

Raymond, the vice president of membership for the business fraternity, is in the intensive care unit of Athens Regional Medical Center and is in stable condition.

Raymond told her mother she felt very lucky.

“She had quite a few problems. She will recover, but it will be a long, drawn out recovery,” her mother said.

Jesse Kuiper, president of the fraternity, said Raymond’s fall was “unfortunate.”

“We had a member slip and fall. It was an unfortunate accident. It’s unfortunate that it happened to one of my good friends.”

Brad Furman, a senior from Roswell, and Andrew Maley, a sophomore from Moore, S.C., witnessed the accident. Furman declined to comment when contacted by The Red & Black. Efforts to contact Monday Maley were unsuccessful.

Kuiper says his thoughts are with Raymond.

“I love her and I can’t wait for her to get back,” he said. “She means a lot to me and a lot to the brothers of the fraternity.”

Raymond’s mother was optimistic about her daughter’s recovery.

“She’s a strong girl,” she said.

The Alpha Epsilon chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi has been at the University since 1922.

The group is among the 20 largest national college fraternities that offers fellowship for pre-business and business-related majors.
