Duo develops smooth ‘indie sensibility’
Portland-based indie-rock band The Helio Sequence may have been around since the late ’90s, but only recently has it been exposed to a wider audience.
Its musical style, which balances layered psychedelia with raw, bluesy folk strains (a la Bob Dylan), attracted the attention of reputable Sub Pop Records in 2004.
The group – technically a duo comprised of singer/guitarist Brandon Summers and keyboardist/drummer Benjamin Weikel – continually finds ways to evolve its sound with each album release.
Newest LP “Keep Your Eyes Ahead,” released in January 2008, pushes the band into more streamlined territory but manages to retain the ethereal textures and Modest Mouse-esque indie sensibility that earlier works such as “Young Effectuals” delivered so well.
The album received acclaim from Alternative Press, Pitchfork Media and Billboard Magazine.
The most outstanding sound shift on “Keep Your Eyes Ahead” is a much greater emphasis on Summers’ vocals, which have coincidentally evolved in both style and delivery.
Summers apparently damaged his vocal chords while touring in support of “Love and Distance” and was forced to rewire his entire approach to singing.
He now possesses a surprisingly smooth croon, which lends itself well to the anthemic soundscapes that fill “Keep Your Eyes Ahead.”
