Univ. tracks departments for unfair athlete grades
The University is no longer on probation for the Jim Harrick, Jr incident, when a teacher gave an undeserved A to a student athlete.
But the NCAA is keeping a close watch on the University, because it is still in the “repeat offender window,” Carla Williams, senior associate athletic director, said Thursday.
If the University favors student athletes in any way in the classroom this year, the punishment will be more severe.
To avoid the situation, the Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics tracks the academic performance of student athletes and monitors the relationships between departments, faculty and athletes.
The committee decided Thursday that one initiative is to determine whether student athletes cluster in certain departments.
“We have to make sure there are no departments or classes that are drawing athletes,” said Jere Morehead, the faculty athletics representative.
The committee also discussed student ticketing issues. Morehead said, “The issue is never going to be solved until there are more seats in the stadium,” he said.
Claudia Shamp, associate dean of student affairs, praised the ticketing office for expanding fraternity seating.
“I have personal experience with the ticketing office and they did everything they could, bent over backwards, to help with fraternity block seating.”
