Sophomore outside hitter named among conference’s best

By on October 8, 2008

After a weekend split, the volleyball team was searching for anything to boost its confidence.

The Bulldogs may have found some on Monday when sophomore outside-hitter Lindsay Gehan was named Southeastern Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week.

“It was cool,” Gehan said of her honor. “It’s really fun. I really credit [setter] Kathleen [Gates], because she sends me the balls a lot. It’s nice to get a lot more volume being on the outside.”

Following a loss to Ole Miss on Sunday, the Bulldogs said they competed well but didn’t quite close the match due to a lack of experience in pressure situations.

But for Gehan, the weekend was one of the best of her career.

In Friday night’s victory, Gehan tied a career high with 15 kills, and followed up with 14 on Sunday. Incredibly, the career weekend came after head coach Joel McCartney moved her out-of-position to make everyone more comfortable on the court.

“I started on the right side and [senior outside-hitter] Maria [Taylor] was on the outside. But she wasn’t very comfortable out there, so we wanted to make her as comfortable as possible, with her being the leader,” Gehan said.

Her success after moving to the other side of the court didn’t go unnoticed by her teammates.

“The team is really proud of her, really happy for her,” Gates said.

“Because she’s been changed around so much this season and she’s handled every position

really well. To have her breakout outside is just really good for the team.”
