Georgia tennis falls at All-America Championships
Georgia will return to Athens without any championship hardware from the All-America Championships for the first time since 2005.
After juniors Nate Schnugg and Jamie Hunt were each defeated in the second round of the singles draw on Thursday at the D D’Novo/ITA All-America Championships in Tulsa, Okla, they still had a chance to make a run in the doubles side of the tournament.
On Friday, however, the Bulldogs duo was bested by Tulsa’s Arnau Brugues and Phil Stevens, 8-5 effectively ending their trip in the Midwest.
Head coach Manuel Diaz was encouraged by the performance of his top two players despite the results.
“We played very well at times, but also a little inconsistent,” Diaz said in a statement to georgiadogs.com. “Hopefully we can learn from this match. We need to take care of our serves a little better. We returned very well and broke serve three times in this match, but we were a little careless in serves and taking advantage of opportunities when we had them. Overall it was a step in the right direction for both of theses guys. We are getting better.”
The team travels to Lexington, Ky. for the ITA Regionals Oct. 16-20
