Volleyball team gains momentum, hits the road

By on October 10, 2008

The Georgia volleyball team is starting to build up some momentum after getting its first Southeastern Conference win of the season last week.

Heading into tonight’s match against Auburn, the Dogs have won two of their last three, most notably a 3-0 sweep of Louisiana State on Wednesday to conclude their five-game homestand.

Currently in the middle of its six-match stretch against the SEC West, Georgia has found success against its western conference foes, despite being the cellar-dwellers of the east, and head coach Joel McCartney knows why.

“Our division is on fire,” he said. “The four teams above us in the east right now are the top four teams in the conference, in terms of record.”

The Bulldogs (9-9, 2-5 SEC) showed a much different team Wednesday night than they did for the first six matches of conference play. But playing the western division opponents might be what Georgia needs as a confidence boost for the rest of the season.

“We knocked off LSU, we’ve played the top team really tough in Ole Miss, and we’ve got [three of six] teams left to play and Auburn obviously on Friday night,” McCartney said.

For the Bulldogs’ next three matches, they will face opponents with a losing record in conference play.

Auburn currently sits at the bottom of the SEC with an 5-12 overall record and 0-6 record in the SEC, and Georgia has won nine of 10 matches against the Tigers.

Alabama and Mississippi State, the two opponents following Auburn, are both tied at 1-4 in SEC play.

The Dogs can keep their heads up, however, by remembering that if they were in the western division, they would be in third place.

With the schedule that follows, look for Georgia to make a run in the SEC.
