Quarter Caps
First Quarter: UGA 10-UT 0
Kicker Blair Walsh opened the game with one of his best kickoffs of the season, kicking a touchback only hours after visiting the University health center to receive intravenous treatment for a migraine. Georgia’s defense held, and the Bulldogs got the ball and drove down for its first score. Quarterback Matthew Stafford hit fullback Shaun Chapas on a screen pass that the bruiser took for 37 yards to the Tennessee 1-yard-line. Fullback Brannan Southerland finished Chapas’ work, taking the ball into the end zone for a touchdown. On Georgia’s next drive, receiver A.J. Green was found wide open but dropped a pass in the end zone on third down as Walsh kicked a 34-yard field goal on the next play.
Second Quarter: UGA 20-UT 7
Continuing a drive that began at the end of the first quarter, Georgia got the ball down to Tennessee’s 3-yard-line before a controversial defensive holding penalty was called on a pass thrown to Mohamed Massaquoi that did not give the Bulldogs an automatic first down. Georgia had to settle for another field goal two plays later as a result, as Walsh nailed a 20-yarder. After holding Tennessee again, Georgia’s offense continued to move the ball with success, driving to the Vols’ 13-yard-line. However, defensive end Robert Ayers – whom Stafford thought was rushing him – dropped into coverage and picked off a pass. Tennessee then drove down the field for its first score, a 2-yard pass from Nick Stephens to Gerald Jones. Georgia responded by putting up another score at the end of the half, when Stafford found Massaquoi from nine yards out.
Third Quarter: UGA 20-UT 14
On Georgia’s second drive of the second half, Stafford found Massaquoi for another big play – a 32-yard pass play that got the Bulldogs down to the Tennessee 7-yard-line. However, three plays later Stafford threw a fade to receiver Michael Moore who was jammed by defensive back Eric Berry, who then intercepted the pass. Tennessee took the momentum and cut Georgia’s lead to six when Stephens hit Lucas Taylor for a touchdown from the Georgia 12-yard-line. Georgia responded with a drive that took up the remaining 5:31 of the quarter, getting down to the Tennessee 24-yard-line.
Fourth Quarter: UGA 26-UT 14
Walsh kicked his third field goal of the game on the first play of the fourth quarter, extending Georgia’s lead to nine. Georgia then forced Tennessee into a three-and-out and got the ball back on its own 13-yard-line. The Bulldogs put together a drive that lasted almost 11 minutes that involved seven toss sweeps. Georgia got down to Tennessee’s 5-yard-line before a delay of game penalty pushed the Bulldogs back to the 10. Walsh came back in and connected on his fourth and final field goal of the game.
