Football team plagued by injuries
With tight end Tripp Chandler and linebacker Dannell Ellerbe possibly making their returns against LSU on Saturday, teammates at those positions both got hurt in Tuesday’s practice, head coach Mark Richt said Wednesday.
Linebacker Akeem Hebron dislocated his ankle and will be out for a while, and third-string tight end Aron White “hurt his shoulder and is out right now.”
“Akeem Hebron had his ankle dislocated and a fracture along with it,” Richt said. “He’s got a little bit of surgery to go here and probably four to six weeks of recovery.”
Hebron had played in six games this season, recording 0.5 tackles.
“It happened the very last play of practice [Tuesday], which is kind of a downer,” Richt said. “That’s a pretty painful injury, and it’s also a very awkward injury. A dislocation is not a pretty-looking injury.”
When asked if he knew which ankle it was that Hebron, who redshirted his freshman year in Athens before a pair of alcohol violations sent him to Georgia Military College, hurt, Richt said no.
“When a guy gets hurt, I just turn around. I just walk away and pray. I have a hard time watching that stuff.”
Ellerbe, who sprained his knee against Alabama, is “making progress,” but Richt said that Darryl Gamble would likely continue to start at Mike linebacker because he’s healthier.
“[Ellerbe]‘s going to take the trip and pad up and we think he’ll play,” he said.
With White “week-to-week” and Chandler still “more in the questionable range” at tight end, it’s possible sophomore Bruce Figgins may be the only true tight end ready for Saturday. But Richt has other options.
“[Fullback Brannan Southerland] knows some of that stuff, and of course Kiante [Tripp] does too,” he said. “We’ve got some guys that can do it.”
Southerland lined up at tight end in his season-opening game against Tennessee.
