Our Take

By on October 23, 2008

Goodbye, Benson

The women’s studies department is moving to a building on North Campus

It’s been a long time coming.

The University announced Wednesday plans to relocate the Institute for Women’s Studies away from the toxic, deteriorating Benson Building.

The Red & Black editorial board appreciates the University’s action and sends best wishes to the women’s studies department, which has pushed for relocation for seven years as it tolerated faulty toilets, mice and rats and asbestos, among other problems.

As the University has hesitated to address issues such as child care and unequal pay, we hope this signifies progress in the administration’s attitude toward women.

We view the demolition of the Benson Building and the relocation of the women’s studies department as a heartening step toward genuine gender equality in the University community.

Perhaps it shouldn’t have taken a 700-name petition, student rally and numerous editorials to effect change, but we’re glad the treatment of women has come to the forefront of University discussion.

Thank you, administration, for caring.

Seeking: opinions.

Do you like long walks up the Baxter Street hill? Do you like late nights of passionate debate? Do you aspire to watch the sun set from The Red & Black offices? Do you want to see the editions before they are printed? Do you like seeing your byline in the morning newspaper?

If so, the editorial board wants you – no, needs you.

We suddenly find ourselves down one member. And we have another who’s lazy and reluctant to write, despite his penchant for yelling in the newsroom.

Our six-person editorial board is comprised entirely of journalism majors, and though we love the J-school, we need some diversity of opinion. The opinions page should represent all students, not just the ones in Grady.

In all seriousness, The Red & Black editorial board meets four times a week – Sunday through Wednesday – at 5 p.m. The romance lasts at least an hour – longer if you’re lucky.

You must be willing to write 250 words at least once a week on issues pertaining to the University community. If you like to affect change, editorial board is for you.

After multiple editorials concerning happenings on campus, the University has instituted an ombudspersons office, amended its arrest policy and most recently announced the demolition of the Benson Building.

Of course the editorials weren’t the only reason for change, but writing them is a way to be proactive in the University community. Plus, it’s always fun to read your own byline in the newspaper.

Even if you don’t want to hang out with us four days a week, feel free to submit your columns (450-600 words) to opinions@randb.com.

Editor’s note: The Red & Black editorial board is an equal opportunity organization.
