Economy not hitting workers on campus

Though many students are concerned about the economy and job stability, part-time workers on campus haven’t been as deeply affected.
J. Michael Floyd, director of Food Services, said in spite of the economic climate, Food Services actually increased the number of students they employed during this academic year.
“The economy has actually made more students want to work, and [they] want to work on campus, because those jobs will be on campus and will work with their schedule,” he said.
Charlotte Garvin, a freshman from Roswell, works for Oglethorpe Dining Hall and noted the lack of change for on campus workers.
“I haven’t been affected at all, actually,” she said. “I get my paycheck weekly, and it hasn’t gone up or down since the economic crisis.”
The crisis hasn’t yet had an influence on the University Bookstore, either.
Bob Bailey, director of the bookstore, said he hasn’t seen a change in sales, but changes won’t be noticeable until spring or summer. The only difference in figures from previous semesters came from a higher number of online textbook sales, he said, which he attributes to students demanding used books.
“It’s not going to affect us as much as the rest of the world, unless freshman class numbers drop dramatically next fall, or unless football fans decide not to buy as much merchandise, so we wouldn’t have to hire enough students to work the football games,” he said.
Stephanie Knott, student employment manager for the Career Center, said that the center’s statistics on DAWGlink has not been significantly different this semester.
“Last year from August to this time we had 72 job listings posted, and this year we have 66,” she said.
Knott added employers can find student workers outside of the Career Center.
Though student workers were asked to work fewer hours this semester, some didn’t change schedules. Either way, the request didn’t change employers’ budgets much.
“Minimum wage recently went up, so our paychecks haven’t been affected,” said Amy Summers, a senior from Norcross who works for Oglethorpe Dining Hall. “I haven’t just been hired, so that might be a factor in the stability of our pay.”
