Lambda to host annual ball with a twist

By on October 24, 2008

Tonight, the Lambda Alliance hosts its annual Coming Out Ball themed, “Superqueeroes.”

“The Coming Out Ball allows LGBTQ students on campus to celebrate a part of themselves that is often not encouraged or even respected by society,” said Shawna Scott, executive director of Lambda Alliance in a news release.

When: Tonight at 8
Where: Tate Reception Hall
Price: $ 3 for students, $5 non students; $5 to enter costume contest

In addition to the Coming Out Ball, there will also be a costume contest this year with the winner receiving a prize.

“The [Superqueeroes] theme is new this year. We thought it would be a lot of fun, especially this close to Halloween,” said Ashton May, Lambda director of outreach in a news release.

Caitlin McCook, director of public relations for the Lambda Alliance, said the ball offers students the chance to have an experience that they may not have had in high school.

“As a part of the LGBTQ community we don’t get the same opportunity to be out in public, but we’re just like straight couples, Mc Cook said. It’s a chance to celebrate our own diversity and the strengths of our community because I don’t think we get to do that often enough.”

However, McCook stressed that the event is open for all to attend.

“Everyone is welcome to come, it’s a safe and very open environment, McCook said.
