Policing problems
University alumni expressed complaints about University police following Saturday’s game against Vandy. One officer even grabbed a man, causing him to nearly drop his 4-year-old daughter. We respect the University police officers and appreciate their service, but we also hope the department will work on communication and tactfulness among the staff.
Arrested Development
After the arrests of two football players following the Vanderbilt game, we hope the coaching staff took the opportunity to remind the players that their actions reflect the team as a whole. Drinking and driving – and other illegal behavior – isn’t cool. Be safe, and go Dogs! We wish you luck in Death Valley.
You’ve got mail
As the University considers changing its UGAMail system, we would like to wholeheartedly suggest Gmail as the new provider. Not only does it offer more than 7,000 megabytes of storage, it also has an enormously comprehensive search application – you can’t lose anything! And honestly, who doesn’t love Gchat?
Free at last
At long last, the deplorable Benson Building will be torn down and the women’s studies department moved to a space on North Campus. We hope this is the first of many actions by the administration to attempt to equalize the treatment of men and women in the University community.
Home sweet home
The University broke ground on the River Road Greek Park this week, allowing construction to begin for four fraternity houses. Although the frats signed 30-year leases, the University will own the houses when the leases end. Instead of basically charging rent, we think the University should allow the men to invest in the houses for eventual ownership – they should be able to make improvements and decorate.
Full disclosure
After learning that a tenured professor was terminated for not disclosing his arrest record, we’d like to advocate that the administration perform background checks on all employees, not just new faculty members and those promoted to positions of trust. If a professor has a criminal record, the University should know about it.
