ELECTION CENTER: US CONGRESS: HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
BOBBY SAXON
DEMOCRAT
STUDENT LOANS
Saxon worked in hog farms, laid pipes, and did construction to pay his way through school. Because of this, available student loans are a big concern. He would support legislation that makes more loans available to students who work for it.
ECONOMY
Saxon will support the working class and small businesses with legislation similar to the Farm Bill and the economic stimulus package. He is a fiscally conservative Democrat. He was in support of the second bailout plan because failing to support it seems to be a much larger risk than to vote against it.
IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN
Saxon will join the other 18 House members who have military experience. Though he has not set a timetable for leaving Iraq, he wants to withdraw the troops, evaluating government progress. Saxon said the U.S. presence has always been needed more in Afghanistan, where a different approach should be taken to provide safety and stability.
HEALTH CARE
Saxon opposes universal health care. He would rather work with programs such as Peachcare and S-chip to get affordable health care. His primary health focus would be on the GI Bill to provide more complete care to veterans.
ENERGY
Though he is not opposed to offshore drilling, he sees it as a “stop gap solution.” Investments in alternative energy would help to end foreign dependence, avoid war and help the economy.
PAUL BROUN
REPUBLICAN INCUMBENT
STUDENT LOANS
Student loans should be made more available by making tax incentives and tax credits available to those who establish student loans. We should lower interest rates and work with students to have an easier repayment plan. We should develop fellowships to help student financing also.
ECONOMY
Government must stop laying its burden on the backs of hard-working Americans. Instead, it should foster an environment that allows small business to establish itself, flourish and create new jobs. The way to do that is to cast off the regulatory and tax burdens from the shoulders of small business. Cutting taxes and reigning in the federal government is fundamental to returning power to you and to promote economic growth. Heavy taxation is bad representation.
IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN
I want to bring our troops home as quickly as we possibly can, but need to do it in victory and honor. We must not just cut and run. If we do, it’s going to embolden the Islamic terrorists. We cannot leave Iraq without obtaining victory and honor.
HEALTH CARE
I am working on a plan to change the philosophy of health care financing to one that is market-based, whether it be through government or private sources. We must get the federal regulatory burden that is on the system decreased or eliminated as much as possible.
ENERGY
Our national policy should encompass every mechanism to make us energy independent. Developing American oil and gas will help.
