Freshman steals show, advancing to semi-finals

As expected, a Georgia freshman stole the show as the women’s tennis team hosted the ITA South Regional Tennis Championships this weekend.
Georgia’s No. 1-seeded freshman Chelsey Gullickson advanced to the semifinals of the “A” draw singles competition after defeating Ole Miss’ Karen Njissen, 6-1, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.
“It’s really good, especially since this is qualifying for the indoors,” Gullickson said. “I’ve gone on a roll and won four matches so far, so hopefully [I can win] one more.”
On Saturday, Gullickson downed Georgia Tech’s Sasha Krupina in the Round of 64 and South Florida’s Ici Rai in the Round of 32.
Sunday’s matches saw Gullickson prevail over Florida’s Anastasia Revzina, 6-2, 6-1, in the Round of 16 before defeating Njissen in the quarterfinals.
“It’s been a really good tournament for Chelsey,” head coach Jeff Wallace said. “The nice thing is she’s actually getting better as each match goes along. When you’re playing a tournament like this, that’s really what you want your players to do.”
Gullickson will face Florida State’s Katie Rybakova today in the semi-finals after Rybakova beat Georgia Tech’s Christy Striplin yesterday in the quarterfinals at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
In other action, Georgia senior Monika Dancevic made it to the Round of 16 in the “A” draw singles before being defeated by Rybakova, 6-3, 6-2.
Junior Yvette Hyndman advanced to the Round of 32 in the “A” draw singles before dropping a match to Georgia Tech’s Noelle Hickey, 7-5, 6-1.
In “A” draw doubles action, the duo of Gullickson and Hyndman advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to Miami, 8-4.
Earlier on Saturday, the tandem had gotten past Georgia Southern in the Round of 32, 8-0, and Florida State in the Round of 16, 8-2.
“I feel like everyone’s had a decent tournament,” Wallace said. “I feel like at this point in time we’re just working on our games and trying to get better. We’re really looking to the spring team’s part of the season. That’s really what this is all about.”
