Victory masks defensive flaws

BATON ROUGE, La. - There were mixed feelings for cornerback Asher Allen after Georgia’s 52-38 win over LSU. While Georgia’s defense came up big with three interceptions – and scored on two – it allowed 497 yards, with 309 of those coming through the air.
“I think it’s a catch-22,” Allen said. “A lot of us were happy with the turnovers because that’s been something we’ve been trying to do. And it’s a real good thing because we’re trying to jump start with that.”
But Allen was concerned about those numbers LSU’s offense gained.
“They put up 30-plus points up there,” Allen said. “No matter how they did it, they did it. So, that’s something we have to work on.”
Gamble said the defense missed opportunities and attributed those missed opportunities to the tempo LSU was setting.
“Guys need to be in the right position and we weren’t lined up right,” Gamble said. “It was kind of hostile [Saturday]. It was hard because they were doing a quick offense. The tempo was quick so we couldn’t get the calls in so that’s why they got the big plays that they did.”
This up-tempo style of offense Georgia saw LSU run may only get faster in Jacksonville this Saturday when the Bulldogs take on Florida as the Gators rolled Kentucky on Saturday, winning 63-5.
Allen said it was good to play a team like LSU a week before battling Florida because it gives the Bulldogs a chance to better prepare for the Gators.
“It’s good to see it out there and just to go against a team like that,” Allen said. “We’ll be able to look at the film and try to see what we did wrong and capitalize on that. We should be able to do that. But next week, the speed’s only going to get faster and the guys are only going to get more physical.”
Linebacker Rennie Curran said Georgia gave up a few big plays, but the Bulldogs played well and got an important win with Florida next on the schedule.
“We made a point last week to continue the momentum going into these road games,” Curran said. “We knew it was not going to be easy, playing in their house. Going into Florida next week, it was crucial that we got this win in terms of where we want to go.”
One thing the defense benefited from against LSU was how well Georgia’s offense executed. Georgia has been criticized for not scoring as many points in recent wins, but it put up 38 offensive points Saturday.
“I think we’ve been playing confident, really, the last three weeks since the Alabama game,” Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said. “The guys have bought in. They’re playing hard. There hasn’t been a direct result on the scoreboard as some would like but we’ve been moving the ball.”
