Benefit to help children in Uganda
Invisible Children will hold its second concert of the semester to benefit children in Uganda today.
Invisible Children is a national nonprofit organization that focuses on increasing awareness, fundraising and advocacy to improve the education and safety of children in Africa.
The money from the benefit concert with help provide books, supplies, teachers and facilities to Awere Secondary School in Uganda to help the children escape the living conditions the people of the area have suffered under for years.
“We wanted to do a concert because it is a great way to get people informed about our organization,” Matthew Beeson, a member of the organization, said. “People come to the concert just to hear music, but they leave knowing about what we do.”
Benefit concerts unite people through music for the cause, Meredith Jones, co-president of the organization, said.
Starbucks was chosen to host the event due to the central location downtown, open space upstairs and the management’s interest.
“The management of Starbucks is very good about helping out humanitarian organizations such as Invisible Children,” Beeson said. “And Starbucks is a good relaxed venue where people can come to get coffee and end up listening to our concert.”
The benefit concert is not just another thing to be involved in, said Jones, who genuinely wants to improve the lives of others.
“We are students helping other students,” she said. “We often take for granted our unique opportunity to help others.”
Invisible Children also holds bake sales, sells handmade Invisible Children merchandise and writes letters to Congressmen in order to support children in Uganda and improve the overall conditions of the country.
The concert will last from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and a $5 donation is suggested at the door.
