Soccer advances in SEC tourney, plays Florida next

By on November 6, 2008

The soccer team was aiming for improvement when it faced South Carolina in the quarterfinals of the Southeastern Conference Tournament Wednesday evening. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, they found it with a 2-1 win that booked a semifinal date with No. 6 Florida.

While members of the team expressed disappointment with their 1-1 draw with the South Carolina Gamecocks earlier in the season, the Bulldogs (10-9-1, 8-3-1 SEC) got what they were looking for the second time around.

A solid first-half performance saw Georgia head into the locker room with a 2-0 lead against the Gamecocks in the tournament’s fourth match of the day in Orange Beach, Ala.

Redshirt freshman forward Alex Hooker delivered her second goal of the season to give the Bulldogs the lead in the 10th minute. And 15 minutes later, Georgia doubled its advantage when senior defender Megan Tomlinson scored her second goal in the last three games.

Tomlison, who was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year Tuesday, has been lining up at forward for Georgia in recent games.

South Carolina tightened things up when junior defender Blakely Mattern pulled a goal back for the Gamecocks in the 80th minute to make the score 2-1.

Despite the win, South Carolina had the majority of the chances. Georgia’s three shots paled in comparison to the Gamecocks’ 18.

In other action, Louisiana State, Tennessee and Florida all advanced to the semifinals with identical 2-1 scorelines.

Georgia faces a tough test against a Florida team that has won 13 straight games. Earlier this season, the Bulldogs lost 2-1 in overtime at Florida.

The two teams also met in last season’s SEC Tournament final as Florida prevailed by a 4-1 scoreline. Georgia posted its first ever win against Florida earlier in the 2007 season.

The Bulldogs’ semifinal match will be played Friday at 7:30 p.m.
