Women’s golf ends fall season poorly
The women’s golf team’s fall season came to a conclusion on a sour note Tuesday, as it stumbled to a 0-4-1 loss to Tennessee on the final day at the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship and finished in 14th place, the lowest of the season.
“I thought we were a little flat today for whatever reason. I think it may have taken a little something out of us beating the Gators yesterday,” said head coach Kelley Hester.
The Dogs were forced to forfeit one of the five matches against the Vols due to the absence of senior Mallory Hetzel who was competing in the Futures Tour Qualifying School.
Tess Fordham provided the Dogs only half point with a draw against Tennessee’s Diana Cantu. Teammate Marta Silva wasn’t able to continue her hot streak in match play as she lost 2-1 to bring her record to 2-1 for the tournament.
The fall was an up and down campaign for the Bulldogs as they set a school record with their victory in the Cougar Classic before struggling down the stretch after losing All-American sophomore Krystle Caithness – who returned home to pursue a professional career – in the middle of the season.
“I thought we were pretty solid overall in the fall. Three of our players are here for their first semester, so we had a very young squad,” Hester said. Obviously, we would have liked to end it a little better, but I think we played some pretty good golf at times. We definitely have some things to improve on heading into the spring.”
