The events are designed to increase knowledge and appreciation of African life and provide a way to enjoy international culture in general.

“The concept of Africa Week was born from the African Student Union’s desire to educate the UGA campus and Athens community about African culture and political issues through a week of unique programs and festivities besides the normal programs that we focus on during the year,” said Joseph Abdallah, president of the African Student Union.

Thursday, the union’s “Taste of Africa” event will allow visitors to sample African food while listening to music.

Other events survey the serious and somber realities facing many Africans.

“We have a program titled ‘Exploring the Abuse of Women.’ This program will focus on the emotional, mental and physical abuse of women in Africa who may have been victims of domestic violence or war,” Abdallah said.

Africa Week will end Saturday night with the International Ball held in Memorial Hall.

“This will be a night to remember. We invite people from all over campus who represent different nations to attend this formal event.”

Donations will be taken at the door. Two dollars or two canned goods are acceptable donations. ASU will apply the money to their future programs, and donate food to the Athens food bank.
